When Water Burns

I would love to say I agree with every single one of the decisions of my home country. I would love to say that in Mexico we take care of our own and ourselves. However, we do not. In Mexico even the water burns.

We are all burning in a constant atmosphere of pressure. From economic instability to one hundred mexicans murdered each day. I would love to say that we have a clear and respected plan to contain violence in our long-harmed country. But we do not. In Mexico, violence consumes our peace in each corner of every city, to large and medium extents.

I would love to say that we respect each other, not only as Mexicans but as human beings as well. That racism is some old tale from the past. That women have the same opportunities and can walk with freedom through a park under a cloudy night sky. I would love to say that we have make progress on both of these topics. But yet again, we have not. In Mexico, each day that passes counts for ten women who could not make it home safe and alive. In Mexico, the color of your skin still determines your opportunities for achieving a good quality life.

I would love to say that our governments have taken care of us. But three political parties have occupied the presidential office and none of them have changed their citizens’ perception of their institutions. In Mexico, when we criticize our governments, they have always answered with “other data”, justifying their negligent endeavors.

But, what can be asked to this country? What can we ask from a country where the sea has burned in flames? Quite literally! These are hard times, yes. But quoting Kennedy, we should now ask ourselves what can we do for our country? What can we do for our good people? For our land? For the animals and plants living in our soil? For our future generations? In this illustrated catastrophic scenario, the only light at the end of the tunnel is the strength of our will as individuals and our collective common convictions. Which should be, to improve our space, as little or as much as we can, for all the others that are here and that will be here. If that means reconstructing a nation from its ashes, just as our national anthem depicts, so be it.
